The first ever WAFTA Bastille Day pétanque competition turned out to be a great success. Not only were we able to have a proper WAFTA get-together (albeit outdoors) for the first time in almost 18 months but the weather was perfect and the competition fierce! It’s the first time we have celebrated Bastille Day in this way and, such was the enthusiasm, I’m sure that we will be doing it again.
Eight teams, across all ages and all drawn out of the sorting hat on the night, took part in a knock-out competition that culminated in a very hard-fought final, swinging first one way then another, neck and neck, until the final point. There was just time to present the winners with their prizes before the light went!
Thanks to everyone who played and spectated, and particular thanks to John and Barbara McNeil for their hard work not only in devising the competition format but also organising it so well on the night.
It was a real pleasure for everyone to see so many members together again and enjoying themselves. We are all looking forward to many more such occasions.
