Winslow’s twin town is Cours.
Cours – called Cours La Ville until recently – is situated just south of the Beaujolais area. More precisely it’s 78km north-west of Lyon and 30 km east of Roanne, in the Department of Rhône.
It’s a small, engaging town of attractive streets and pleasant open spaces with approximately the same population as Winslow. Now the lively centre of a newly formed commune, it has retained all of its charm and character. Set high up in a beautiful landscape, at an altitude of more than 600 metres, it is surrounded by the forests and meadows that lie between the Loire and the Rhône. And it’s close to the vineyards and producers of the Beaujolais and the Rhône!
Once known throughout France for blanket making and textiles, much of the local industry is now timber based and uses wood from the local forests. Cours’ long connection with Winslow – 40 years – has been marked in many ways including a named street – Rue de Winslow – and a square – Place Winslow (Winslow, in return, has its own Cours La Ville Close). There is a traditional red telephone box and a red GPO post box, and in both Cours and Winslow, matching granite milestones giving the distance between our two towns, 1040km, all presented to Cours by WAFTA.
